About Ivette Roman Roberto

Ivette Román is a Puerto Rican experimental voice performer, educator, and community organizer based in Houston, Texas. With a lifelong commitment to voice as a tool for transformation, she creates participatory performance projects that center healing, cultural identity, and collective memory. Since relocating to Houston, she founded the Collective of Puerto Ricans in Houston in 2019 and led numerous community arts initiatives supporting displaced Puerto Rican communities. Ivette’s work includes RÉQUIEM (2021), a community music project funded by the National Performance Network, and the forthcoming Cantata for Progress (2025), an experimental sound-based gathering for Puerto Rican musicians in Houston’s East End. She has collaborated with MECA, Nameless Sound, and DiverseWorks and has performed at venues such as Lawndale Art Center, the Rothko Chapel, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, blending avant-garde voice, improvisation, and multimedia storytelling with civic engagement. With her experimental voice compositions, such as Voices of Enchantment, Sin-funny for Guitar, and Symphony of Silence with Four Necessary Movements, Ivette has performed at international festivals in Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. Recently in Houston, she has organized events like the annual Commemoration of Hurricane María, HOUricán Café-Teatro, and community actions in solidarity with Puerto Rico. As a cohort member of Artist INC, NALAC, and Music to Life, Ivette continues to use the arts as a vehicle for regeneration, resilience, and public dialogue.
