About Jess Bartlet

Refreshing, individual, and distinct. Island Fox is the genreless project of Jess Bartlet (b.1990). As a prolific DIY artist Jess writes, produces, and now mixes all of her own material. A regular attendee of Red Bull’s monthly engineering events; (titled Normal Not Novelty) it was here she met mix-engineer Marta Salogni (Björk, Frank Ocean, M.I.A) whose work she admires greatly, and got to shadow mixing. In 2018 she obtained an audio engineering bursary from the AES and got intro'd to recording engineering at The Church Studios. Jess is a freelance DIY engineer, producer, and songwriter keen to work on more writing, producing, recording, and mixing for other artists. Sometimes working artist sessions out of Giant management's studio in Hackney she loves collaboration. In her own work Jess has a renaissance approach to her art & has a hand in all of her art-direction. Her favourite type of music is usually genreless and boundary pushing, with a unique/ strong identity or meaning. A scientist, and all round geek (with a particular interest in fantasy, sci-fi, and gaming) Jess’ inspiration first and foremost stems always from following her curiosity, and experimentation. Out of this comes her playful approach to producing and mixing. Jess also has an avid interest in mixing in 360 sound and ambisonics for gaming etc, although currently highly proficient in Ableton, she is learning Reaper and is keen to pick up Pro Tools.

Jess's Experience

As a musician, I grew up playing classical/and jazz piano as well as jazz and world drums. I drummed for Sam Smith and would attend the UK Jazz Festival as a house drummer. I still go to world percussion workshops every year which helps greatly inform my production and writing practice. One of my favourite albums growing up was Michael Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ which I love the writing and production of. I particularly like recordings that have heritage, or are ‘imperfect’ in some senses, which makes them beautiful. Lots of my forthcoming work is very unique, and spans across genres – including “Comrade” which is significantly more indie in sensibility to my other work. Last year I was asked to make some beats for 6lack, which has now turned into a very unique hiphop EP elsewhere. I was also scouted to engineer for Moses Sumney late 2018 too. One of my favourite albums in recent years has been Michael Kiwanuka’s Love & Hate. I believe engineering, mixing and production to be as valuable creatively in shaping the sound as the music itself. I’m really keen to do more collaborations with artists, and would love to be able to augment their work and vision if possible. Please do get in touch if you would like to hear more about my forthcoming work this year.
