About Kimberly Sunstrum

Kimberly Sunstrum is a queer, Botswana-Canadian singer-songwriter based in Ottawa, Ontario - the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the anishinaabe. Blending profound vocals with heartfelt lyrics, Sunstrum’s music delves into topics on family, race, feminism, queerness and the ways these multidimensional identities influence how we navigate the world. She writes about the world as she sees it with a powerful poetry and grace. Sunstrum’s music is an inspired blend of the music she listened to growing up in Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada. She strings together sounds from South African pop hits, classic R&B, old-time country and 70’s Motown and spins them all together in to her own unique melodies.

Kimberly's Experience

I am currently a full-time musician and sound engineer. Being able to be diverse in the music industry is something I take a lot of pride. It’s important for me to know as much as I can about how my industry works so that I can take advantage of any and every opportunity that comes my way. I want to continue to thrive and grow in this industry and take the responsibility of being a representative of my communities very seriously as I aspire to take space in this industry.
