About lee torchia

Lee Torchia sings Swing Jazz and East Indian Classical Raga. "Loverman: A Tribute to Billie Holiday" features the all-star rhythm section Ram Ramirez, Milt Hinton and Mel Lewis. She spent 20 years studying the modes and microtones of North Indian Ragas with her Guru, Pandit Pran Nath, and travelled to India with him 4 times to absorb the culture. Precision in tonality combined with the magical mystery of the ancient modes became the focus her life's work, performing at many U.S. colleges and teaching privately in NYC. For the last 3 years, she performed/produced the NY Public Access Cable Show "Lee Torchia Sings" exclusively singing Raga in the traditional format, accompanying herself with the tambura, the ancient drone instrument, and working with a tabla player (drums). As a jazz singer, she has worked with James Weidman, Ray Mantilla, Walter Bishop, Jr., and many others, including her recent group, “Jazz Women of New York”. As a bandleader, she has combined jazz and raga into a new form she terms: "JazzRaga". This is a fluid, often improvisational form, which includes Jazz and Indian musicians. What makes her work different from the normal fusion of East and West is her long study and analysis to discover which jazz tune can be culturally and musically combined and performed with strict adherence to the classical mode of the raga.
