About Lisa LaRue

Lisa LaRue is a progressive rock keyboardist and composer whose musical journey began in childhood when she first played “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” on a toy organ. A self-taught prodigy, she began performing publicly and creating both original music and album art from an early age, foreshadowing her future as a multidisciplinary artist. Deeply influenced by bands such as Kansas, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Lisa’s passion for symphonic rock led her to collaborate with Gong’s Gilli Smyth on Dreamscapes, which was picked up by Voiceprint US Records, launching her recording career. She made history as the first female artist signed to SOAR’s Natural Visions label with her debut Beloved Tribal Women, a fusion of music and visual art by Muscogee Creek artist Joan Hill. Her discography spans culturally rich works such as Children’s Songs in the Cherokee Language, Ama, Transformation 2012, and Beautiful Life. She is mentioned in the Houghton-Mifflin Encyclopedia of Women’s History as a pioneering female Native American musician. In 2009, she formed Lisa LaRue Project 2K9, an early internet-based collaboration with global artists, which evolved into her band Lisa LaRue 2KX—a collaboration with John Payne (Asia), Michael Sadler (Saga), and others. Their album Fast and Blue and the EP Sussuration earned acclaim in the prog rock world. Her 2018 release Origins (Melodic Revolution Records) is a retrospective of her first 25 years of recording. Lisa has also contributed to albums by artists like Esquire (Nikki Squire), United Progressive Fraternity, and many others and has co-released albums with John Timothy and Federico Fantacone. She was nominated for a Native American Music Award, a Hollywood Music Award and named Native American Artist of the Year by the Oklahoma Music Awards. In 2024, she was named Northeast Kansas’ Remarkable Woman of the Year by Nexstar Media. She is married to producer and vocalist John Baker of Forever Twelve.
