About Liza Mulholland

I am a musician, singer-songwriter, composer and music teacher from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. I have written music for many projects, as well as as my own solo album and single releases, and have collaborated with numerous artistes on many diverse projects, both live shows and recording projects. I sing and play piano and piano accordion, was classically trained on piano but moved into the fields of folk, indie and jazz. I play in local bands Dorecabelle and Wounded Moose, and also have a jazz duo (Liza & Loretta) with Steve Nisbet and work with Americana artistes including Detroit's Pat Dennis and cajun fiddler Kenny Brady. My music has been used in several short films, including for Scottish Women’s Aid and I am also a co-founding member and writer/performer with Inverness’s Edge of the World Cabaret. With novelist and poet Donald S Murray, I co-created ‘Metagama: An Atlantic Odyssey’, a migration story to mark the centenary of mass emigrations from the Scottish Hebridean Islands to Canada and the USA and honour the lives and stories of those young emigrants, of whom my maternal grandparents were two, as teenagers. We brought together an ensemble of top musicians and artistes, all of whom wrote new music for the project, to tour the show in the Scottish Highlands and Islands in 2023, with the support of Creative Scotland. The show met with great acclaim and 5* reviews, with sold-out performances including Celtic Connections Festival in January 2024. The ensemble recently gained Creative Scotland support for an album of music and song from the show, and we have been recording this album across March and April 2025, with the launch planned for our concert at the HebCelt Festival on the Isle of Lewis in July 2025. Further concert dates are booked for the show 'Metagama: An Atlantic Odyssey' in Autumn 2025 and beyond. I am Musical Director and composer on Elphen Chronicles, visual artist Paul Taggart’s story, art and music project, the album of which is to be released in late 2025. I devised and produced the show 'Stand and Stare' for Celtic Connections 2027, in response to the famous and much-loved poem by WH Davies, 'Leisure', with new music, song, art and poetry.

Liza's Experience

I have studied, played and composed music for nearly my whole life and have used the wide experience of playing and performing to bring to many projects, both live and recorded. I have devised and created many musical projects, composed for and performed in many, and through the experience and confidence gained from many years working in varied genres of music, I have been able to apply my skills to many situations, in the recording studio, onstage and with students. I have progressed to leading on projects and through my experience of devising and producing television arts documentaries for the BBC, I have gained production management skills, which I have also brought to live show productions and recording projects.
