About Marquita Brown

Genre-bending Marquita Antoinette Brown has a simple, classic aesthetic with a style that sits at the intersection of sexy slow jams, soulful blues, and raw rock 'n' roll. With sultry vocals and an intoxicating indie vibe, her music stands in a class all its own. The South-Carolina-born, Georgia-based alt-pop artist grew up immersed in music. In any given hour in her home she'd be listening to everything from pop icons like Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Boys II Men to English pop like Tears for Fears, gospel like BeBe/CeCe Winans and her grandparents' country tunes. Later came, Nirvana, Jewel, Alanis Morrissette, Bryan Adams, Depeche Mode, En Vogue, Foreigner and Green Day. Driven by the force of music, Marquita enjoyed the contrast in sounds and styles, powerful vocals, and, most importantly, challenging and inspiring lyrics. That ever-shuffling playlist provided a meaningful refuge throughout a childhood dotted with traumatic experiences, including fending off the advances of handsy boys in elementary school, moving from town to town every few years, and surviving toxic relationships. She turned to songwriting as an emotional and creative outlet, discovering early on that she could appreciate the art of relationships better when she wrote a damn good song about them. It was her fascination with expression through the verse of a song that pushed the young writer to turn her own poems into songs. It wasn't long from there that she entered the arena as a musician, crafting songs with different sounds, textures, and wordplay. As she refined her songwriting chops and lyrical expression, Marquita was increasingly drawn to creating songs with a tension between fast and slow, ballad and danceable groove, pushing boundaries all the while. Over the past few years and as Marquita has built her set list, she has worked with different musicians and began producing the sounds to accompany her lyrics. Though she has worn various hats producing, songwriting and singing all of her material, in the end, she lets her music to do most of the talking, voicing sentiments and ideas that are elevated in their expression when set to rock, rhythm and blues. Her love of making music shines through her songs, which can provoke thoughts, inspire moves, and speak to a person's need to be a part of something big, all in one sitting. For Marquita, transforming a song from words on a page to musical notes and then styled sounds and beats is her therapy. It is also proving therapeutic for her fans, who love taking the journey with her. Today, Marquita works by day for a farm after 14 years at a domestic violence agency in the Bible belt, immersing herself after hours in the art of creating and producing recordings that rouse and energize through the many stories she has to tell. "Let's take long journeys together, you and I, to the time when you leave me far behind. Then, you will realize you listen because maybe my story is your story, maybe my voice is your voice and, although I don't represent you, maybe you'll find a little bit of me in you." - Marquita Brown
