About Barb McFadden

Thank you for providing a space to share my passion for music and for the opportunity to connect with others in in the industry. I play lead and rhythm guitar, piano, love to create drum tracks from scratch, and use a sequencing program to compose and play all the tracks. Most of my compositions are instrumental (Blues, dance music, trance, electronica, intellectual, and music for sound tracks). Growing up I was involved in sports and music; played lead guitar in a garage band in high school, was in a duo act, played at parties, some bars, sang back up and played lead guitar, and bowled in local tournaments for cash. I was born too soon to compete in the PWBA and WNBA, and my guitars and music equipment were stolen so I decided to put myself through college, got a job bartending at a high volume dance bar to pay for it, and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from S.D.S.U. After that I knew I’d never be happy unless I made a serious attempt to play and compose music which led to putting together a music studio, taking music theory classes, honed my skills on guitar, piano and drums; got a job at selling musical equipment, released a CD using the name “Spyce;” taught myself HTML to make a website to promote the CD, created a product line of gift items with the CD cover photograph, applied for trademark rights, and ran into a problem at the Patent Trademark Office. The P.T.O. said the Spice Girls applied for a trademark and only one party could use the name (I sold products using the name first). It took two years to resolve. Gloria Allred referred me to a trademark attorney. She’s awesome. My pursuit to play and compose music came to a screeching halt when my mother was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2001 (Helped mom through two surgeries and chemotherapy). In 2002, my brother served my dad and me a summons to be in Superior Court on the day of our mother’s funeral alleging my dad was incompetent that resulted taking care of my dad and opposing my brother pro per in a fierce seven-year court battle (Had to learn all about elder law). My parents went bowling three times a week so it didn’t take long to get back into bowling for money again. In 2002 I was competing with the best women bowlers in the world, won the 2002 PWBA RPC at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, and wanted to compete on the national tour for a year, but the PWBA folded in 2003. That resulted in making a commitment to make bowling more of a spectator sport to increase prize funds for competitive bowlers. After spending years creating, developing, and testing various bowling projects (Changed the game), it has been difficult to get the projects off the ground. My music studio has been in storage for 20 years, always have an electric guitar with me. In the summer of 2018, I was inspired to write the music and lyrics for a fun song entitled, “Vote Them Out!” (Upbeat 12-bar blues). It was difficult to find a band to do the song because it is political so I had to sing it and record the song myself. Update: OCTOBER 2024 - Was diagnosed with cancer last year, had radiation, getting strength back. Two companies are reviewing my sportsbook project, want to find a producer for a game show I wrote to raise funds for charitable organizations, and would like to get back into composing music again. Don't know how much time I have left to get at least one goal accomplished. You'd might as well call me "Old Spyce." Time flies. Thank you for checking out my story.

Barb's Experience

Worked in a dance bar and owned a dance bar. Learned how to DJ (Vinyl). Used a sequencing program, midi controller, and sound modules to create, play, and record all of the tracks from scratch. Enjoy creating various genres of music. Play lead and rhythm guitar the best. Also play piano and enjoy creating drum tracks.
