About Ashley Onnembo

I graduated Emerson College with a Bachelors of Science degree in Journalism in Aug. 2023. The four years I spent traveling around Boston attending local venues and house shows after classes mixed with the unbridled passion gleaming through a musician's eyes as they dissected the meaning behind a lyric taught me something about myself that I couldn't learn from any professor: the love for music burned deep inside me, and I'd do everything to continue shining a light on independent scenes. I approach my stories by bringing music into conversation with culture, gender politics and history as a way of understanding society. I also report on the issues that directly affect underrepresented artists. No matter what the size or scope, I believe social justice, advocacy, and uplifting diverse narratives are essential to my coverage.

Ashley's Experience

As a multimedia journalist, I prioritize covering local, independent music scenes by using different mediums to effectively communicate the story at hand. Although my expertise lies in writing long-form narrative feature and profile articles, I also have experience in concert photography, documentary collaboration, producing audio stories and hosting guest DJ sets. I am also interested in gaining more experience working in live events. One of my favorite tasks while acting as the Editor-in-Chief of Five Cent Sound Magazine involved booking Boston-based musicians and handling all artist relations for each print issue’s launch party.
